MUMBAI
General Information about
Mumbai
JUHU BEACH
Located
18-km north of the city
centre, it's a major beach
site on the shores of
Arabian Sea and is one of
the posh localities of
Mumbai where one can find
the bungalows of the famous
film personalities of
Bollywood. It's also a
favorite shooting site among
the filmmakers as many film
shootings are also held over
here.
On the southern end of the
Juhu beach one can find many
Luxury hotels and
apartments, which are
regarded as a favourite
haunt of Mumbai's movers and
shakers. The beach, which
almost seems deserted during
weekdays, always tends to
get very crowded on
weekends.
On weekends one can take the
pleasure of horse and donkey
rides, dancing monkeys,
acrobats, cricket matches,
toy sellers and every other
type of Indian beach
entertainment. Vendors ply
on the beach calling
attention to their wares,
which are mostly souveneirs
like T-shirts and cute
little Indian dolls made
from seashells.
Eating Joints At Juhu
Beach:
Generally it is not a very
good place to swim, but it's
an ideal snack joint, with
various food stalls. If you
would like to try out
Bhelpuri or a Kulfi in
Mumbai, Juhu is the place to
be. If you want a more fancy
excursion, visit Juhu's many
five star hotels, for a
steaming cup of coffee and a
splendid view of the coast.
The government run Juhu
Centaur also has a 24-hour
coffee shop with a view of
the sea.
Attractions
Around Juhu Beach
Versova Beach:
Versova
Beach is the nearby
attraction located towards
the north of Juhu, which is
a home to Mumbai's largest
Koli fishing community.
MARINE DRIVE:
If you're feeling energetic, a stroll down Marine Drive is
possibly the best way to discover Mumbai. This is a
windswept promenade, flanked by the sea and a row of art
deco buildings. Looped between the concrete jungle of Nariman Point, Mumbai's Manhattan, and the leafy green
slopes of Malabar hill, Marine Drive was once called the
queen's Necklace, strung with glittering street lights like
an enormous strand of imperious jewels. It is also one of
Mumbai's busiest roads, an important artery for the heavy
suburban traffic heading downtown. Cars whiz continually
past the two mile stretch, past huddled lovers, children and
babies in perambulators. Like other seafronts, this is where
most of south Mumbai comes to breathe in some fresh air.
NEHRU CENTER:
The
Brainchild of late Rajni
Patel, was conceived as a
tribute to one of the
greatest architects of
modern India, Pandit
Jawaharlal Nehru. He symbolised the idea of
enlightened curiosity,
scientific temper and
secular values. He had
a strong belief in the
people of India.
Nehru Centre
encompasses of various
departments like,
Discovery of India, a
permanent exposition,
Nehru Planetarium, Culture
Wing, Art Gallery,
Library, Publication Wing
,etc.
The Centre's first
achievement was to provide
the city with a
Planetarium, which was inaugurated by Mrs. Indira
Gandhi on 3rd March,
1977. It soon acquired a
distinct identity on the map
of Mumbai.
"The Nehru Planetarium
presented its 26th sky
theatre programme "Astronomy of the
Millennium" on 22nd January,
2,000.
The Discovery of India
Building, was designed by
eminent architect, Mr. I.M.Kadri. Its
architectural design
embodies Nehru's vision of
step - by - step rise
of Modern India from
a broad base of a green
revolution, progressing into
different directions
at varying levels.
There is also an Auditorium
with a seating capacity of 934 seats with marvellous acoustic
effects and other state-of-
art facilities. It is the
nucleus of various
cultural and intellectual
activities held at Nehru
Centre.
Nehru Centre's live
interest in the spirit of
scientific enquiry, art and
culture is
enlivened by organising a wide range of
activities.
The Nehru Planetarium :
The Nehru
Planetarium, commissioned on 3rd March, 1977 has grown into
a Centre for scientific study of astronomy and for meeting
of scientists and scholars for discussions and lectures,
arranged periodically on various stellar and Astronomical
events.
The programmes are aimed at inspiring students. These
include Science quiz contests, Astro-painting, Science
elocution, Astro-poetry and Astro-quiz competitions. Special
arrangements are made to watch, study and photograph Solar &
Lunar eclipses, and many such other events. Telescopes are
installed outside the Planetarium to enable eager visitors
to watch these phenomena.

rural areas to project its shows for people and children to
make them aware of the astronomical progress. These shows
are highly popular and in great demand.
